“…a lot of novelty comes from bringing disciplines together. It’s another mode of scientific discovery.”
Madhur Anand, Ecology for the Masses
Society is confronting unprecedented environmental challenges. While global and wide-reaching issues such as climate change, biodiversity declines, invasive species, habitat loss, and resource scarcity have many scientific solutions, practitioners have come to an agreement that solving most environmental challenges are at their core human issues as well as scientific.
When creative writers, artists, and scientists come together to talk and work and co-produce in real time to better articulate environmental problems, we see knowledge move to practice and vice-versa. The Anand Lab, and the University of Guelph’s experimental Collaboratory, are places to bring together art and science in unprecedented, complementary, and powerful ways.
Below are some examples of the type of interdisciplinary projects, pieces, and that the Anand Lab creates, supports, and participates in!
The following are interdisciplinary art & science collaborative projects that Dr. Anand and her lab run, participate in, and support.

Creative Writing for Environmental Science Course (ENVS 3240)
In this innovative interdisciplinary course students examine the role that creative writing can play in creating inspiration, interest, and even rigor in scientific thinking and communication.
Discover collaborative approaches and synergies through cross-disciplinary conversations and other art-meets-science projects facilitated, curated, and hosted by Dr. Anand and the Global Ecological Change and Sustainability Lab.
