Creative Writing for Environmental Science

“This is an opportunity to have our scientific curriculum reflect evolving interests of students and the evolving needs of society.”

Madhur Anand, on the ENVS 3240 course

In this innovative interdisciplinary course students examine the role that creative writing can play in creating inspiration, interest, and even rigor in scientific thinking and communication.

Science is inherently a creative endeavour, which often gets lost in translation, and scientists are increasingly being called upon to communicate their ideas and findings to new audiences. In this innovative interdisciplinary course, we will examine texts of creative writing for the environmental science presented within, following up with reading scientific articles related to the subject matter. We will examine the role that creative writing (poetry, storytelling, essays and more) can play in creating inspiration, interest, and even rigor in scientific thinking and communication. Ultimately, the student will be able to interpret and appraise the creative process as it unfolds a scientific discovery, differentiate and apply techniques of creative writing, and interpret and discuss the fundamentals of an environmental science topic.

This collaborative ZINE was developed as a part of the Delisted Project, an interdisciplinary project bringing people into proximity with the 32 species and subspecies of nonhuman and more than human beings that were removed from the endangered species list because the Fish and Wildlife Service and NOAA/NMFS have concluded they are extinct It was assembled through contributions from the ENVS 3240 course and design by Liane Miedema Brown.
